Why Small Farms?

Small farms across the Northeast are the bedrock of the rural economy, culture, and working landscape. They are an emerging hub of a regional strategy to improve soil & climate health and reduce water pollution.

Small farms are much of the agricultural acreage in Vermont, New York, and Pennsylvania.

Small farms account for half the milk supply in Vermont, New York, and Pennsylvania. Further erosion of this milk supply threatens the regional working landscape and rural economy.

With their stewardship of the Northeast’s land base, small farms are crucial to a comprehensive regional climate resilience and recovery strategy.

Through academic research and the Small Farm Agritech Program, we champion the transformation of small farms into hubs of innovation for climate resilience.
